But what about loving others? That depends entirely on how you spoon it. Opening your heart to anyone can feel scary and even dangerous. Too often we get stuck in the rut of codependency. ‘Inside of You…’ is a musical antidote to dependency, reminding us that a healthy relationship of any kind is built on the solid foundations of each individual — the trust that we can each hold our own equally.

In that sense, the Spice Girls got it backwards. There is no real ‘2 Become 1’ to strive for, but a beauty in ‘the surrender’ that we ourselves can only control. In self-reliance, we ditch the phrase ‘my better half’ for the path of self-containment. As your own person, you are your own universe, forever separate from the other.
